Intrauterine Insemination, IUI

Donor Insemination Information

You have asked to participate in the Donor Insemination Program commonly referred to as Artificial Insemination using Donor sperm (AID), and many aspects of the program that patients inquire about are outlined below.

Pregnancy Rates

In the uncomplicated patient, (one with no other known causes of infertility), pregnancy rates per cycle utilizing frozen sperm are about 15% per cycle. Please note that your chances for conceiving in a number of cycles are good but that not all patients will conceive. Pregnancy rates in women having an additional cause or causes for their infertility will be somewhat lower. The uncomplicated patient may achieve a 60-80% cumulative pregnancy rate after 6 cycles of AID.IUI Couple

Donor Selection

You may choose a donor from the commercial sperm bank of your choice. All donors are screened periodically for a variety of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV. The sperm that is utilized has been kept in quarantine for at least six months and only released after the donor is tested again for sexually transmitted diseases. A family history is usually taken by the medical director of the sperm bank. While criteria may vary depending upon which commercial sperm bank you choose, in general, donors are not utilized if:

Setup as a list (1) a family history is not obtainable (i.e., donor was adopted); (2) there is a definite genetic disorder in the family (i.e., cystic fibrosis) unless the carrier status of that donor can be obtained; or (3) there is a strong family history of any medical condition. Donors are usually matched to general physical characteristics of the husband and/or wife. You may wish to know the husband's blood type to choose a donor.

Transferring the sperm vials from a commercial bank to the Presbyterian - Harris Methodist Hospital ARTS Andrology Lab is your responsibility. You will need to complete a sperm storage consent form obtained from the ARTS Laboratory (214-345-2624 or 817-250-7034). Most sperm banks require a separate consent form and payment before shipping sperm. In order to minimize shipping cost and to facilitate convenience, you may wish to order 3 vials of sperm. If you do not achieve pregnancy after 3 vials, you may wish to change sperm donors. In general, two types of sperm are available, pre washed and unwashed. Sperm preparation cost for pre washed sperm is slightly lower than the preparation cost for unwashed sperm, but we are able to accept both types depending upon your preference.

Consent Forms-Download

In addition to the Sperm Storage Consent form, a Donor Insemination consent form obtained from the office of DFW Fertility Associates will need to be signed by both husband and wife, witnessed by a Notary Public.

Pre cycle Testing

Tubal patency is established by a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) done in the first part of the cycle. Cervical cultures and possibly other blood tests may be conducted as well. If these tests are normal you will be able to begin Donor Insemination (AID). If any of the screening tests are not normal, additional therapy and/or additional testing may be required prior to beginning AID.

Insemination Procedures

Ordinarily, one insemination is performed per cycle. The intrauterine insemination is performed at the time of ovulation. The timing of the inseminations is determined by serial urinary LH-Surge testing or by serial ultrasounds of the ovaries. All inseminations are performed by the intrauterine technique utilizing sperm that has been washed. Inseminations are performed every day of the week.

Costs

Cost will vary from $900 - $1500 per cycle depending upon the cost for the sperm, type of monitoring conducted, and possible use of fertility medications. The actual costs will be determined by the number of sonograms, type and amount of medication, sperm used, and the number of office visits. Please refer to the Donor Insemination Estimated Fees Schedule for detailed costs. You can find more general information on fertility treatment cost and accepted insurance plans on our infertility treatment costs page.

Can I have the same donor for a second child?

Arrangements to set aside enough sperm for a second child should be made prior to the delivery of pregnancy. Unused sperm vials or additional sperm vials may be stored for your future use, although the Presbyterian - Harris Methodist Hospital ARTS Lab reserves the right to discontinue long-term sperm storage, thereby requiring the owner to transfer the sperm to a long-term cryopreservation facility. A storage fee will be charged by the Presbyterian - Harris Methodist Hospital ARTS Lab.

Legal Issues

Under Texas statute any child conceived through Donor Insemination is considered to be the legal child of both husband and wife and not the child of the donor. The current consent form indicating your understanding of the applicable Texas law will be kept on file. If there are any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
